Half H-bridge Motor Driver
However when I’ve started working with them, I’ve realized that many of my experiences were not documented and some of the things I’ve learned seemed to be missing from those descriptions. Green line represents motor speed measured by encoder (bemf calculation gave same result). I want to understand the current path during that period. Which one runs cooler: the diode or the switch? http://enterprisesecurityblog.com/h-bridge/half-bridge-motor-driver.php

See datasheet pg 6 for diode connection example. The arrangement is sometimes known as a single-phase bridge inverter. Few packages, like L9110, have built-in flyback diodes for back EMF protection. When driving larger motors, a half bridge with 2 N-channel devices and bootstrap or chargepump circuits are a much batter option.
A multiple-output flyback converter is well-suited to this application. Required fields are marked *Comment Name * Email * Website Notify me of followup comments via e-mail. For a purely inductive load, the current waveform would be a triangle wave, with its peak depending on the inductance, switching frequency, and input voltage.
for example the diode off of the ground ( the one immediately to the right of the motor ) flows AWAY from the ground … can someone confirm that this is We're here to help you start something. This requires a more complex design since the gates of the high side MOSFETs must be driven positive with respect to the DC supply rail. That’s true in almost all cases, but you’ll need to read other articles to understand why.
In this very simple motor model, the mechanical parameters are completely ignored. This is an excellent way to get started quickly with robotics! Also if there a flow chart (software code) which can explain the logic of driving them would be great.

The main question that determines the answer is heat dissipation. The MOSFET used on the ground-side of the motor doesn't actually need to be there.
